Honoring our bellies - Weekending

Things are getting back to normal around here. We are back in Cologne, Aaron is alive and kicking as usual, only I am still fighting a cold still but our energy levels are definatly reloaded. Just about in time to do some last baby preparation activities.
When I was very pregnant with Aaron my friends daughter painted a wonderful dragon on my belly so we wanted to keep up that painting tradition and came back together for it again today. Only today we had a few more participants.

I absolutly adore the coloring pencils we used this time. They are Aarons normal pencils he uses to draw with a lot on paper. Giving them a little water turns them into water colors though. Size and shape are perfect for little (and big) hands, they never break and last forever. Genius, really! ( And I am not getting any money for saying this ;-) ) For belly painting you just dip the top in water and off you go! Just wipe it off with a wet cloth any time from the skin and if any color got into our clothes just give them a normal wash. No mess what so ever!

I hope you recognize the beautiful butterfly on my belly. Aaron got a fire brigade because he loves the "tutatata" as he calles the blue light hooter nowadays. My friends daughter wanted a flower herself and her brother (and my godson) asked for a monster truck... I tell you we had a very busy and funny sunday afternoon. How has been your weekend?

Same, same but different...

Ich muss gestehen, ich träume schon lange von einem wunderschönen, handgetöpferten Geschirrservice. Einheitlich, schlicht, schön und doch jedes Stück individuell. Leider ist Töpfern immer etwas kompliziert, da man ja auch eine Gelegenheit zum Brennen braucht, und überhaupt muss man das erstmal so richtig können. Naja, jedenfalls, bisher sieht es in unserem Geschirrschrank noch so aus, wie zu meiner Studentenzeit in der WG. Alles ist bunt durcheinander gewürfelt und aus den unterschiedlichstens Perioden meines Lebens. Hat auch was schönes, wenn ein Geschirrschrank Geschichte erzählt. Das soll er ruhig auch weiter tun. Trotzdem, so ein schönes Set für besondere Momente und Gäste ist ein Herzenswunsch. Bis der in Erfüllung geht habe ich aber nun eine andere Lösung gefunden, inspiriert von der wunderbaren JenMun(a), deren handbemaltes Geschirr mich in seiner Schlichtheit einfach verzaubert hat. Zunächst wollte ich mal ein Set Tassen haben die zusammen passen. Ich fand auch direkt die passenden weißen Tassen, groß und trotzdem mit einem dünnen Rand, genau so, wie ich es mag.

Dann haben Aaron und ich erstmal die Porzellanmarker ausprobiert und haben zwei alte kleine Tassen damit bemalt die ich noch rumstehen hatte. Sehr originelles Design ist draus geworden :-)

Für die richtigen Tassen habe ich mir dann bei Pinterest noch viel Inspiration geholt. Und bin dann auch fündig geworden. Leider kann ich für das Bild keine Quelle finden, da der Link nicht funktioniert, sonst hätte ich gerne dem Urheber Kredit gezollt.

Vor dem entgültigen Design habe ich noch viel herumprobiert und mit Farben experimentiert. Letztlich ist das Türkis mit dem Marker entstanden, das Grau aus Schwarz-Weiß Mischungen aus dem Töpfchen mit Farben die ich noch hatte: 

Mal sehen, vielleicht stelle ich mir so nach und nach ein ganzes Service zusammen...

P.S. Not joining Ginnys for Yarn Along today, since there was not a lot of knitting going on last week. Instead I designed my own mugs. I am still dreaming of my own, hand pottered dishes, maybe one day I will own it but until then I want to at least serve coffee in simular mugs from now on...

And how do you like this old and redesigned teapot I found in a store for handmade items last week? It looks almost like a doodle with a marker and it's brilliant I think! I really have to start looking for plain thrifted dishware.

Yarn Along - Spring Blessings

Despite having attended my grandmothers funeral last weekend there has still been enough time and peace for some knitting. Spending time with my mum always means there is time to knit, time to be creative. I found some funny things she has come up with over the last month, like this cosy knitted lamp shade. Made with her own handspun yarn of course... I did sign up for some privat spinning classes with her during the easter holidays, I can't wait! Especially since I have found this great spinning inspirations here (in German, but its worth it just checking out the images!)

How is my own knitting doing? Well, there are still some sheep to be sent off... and there are a few babies due this summer, so I started a kicking bag like this one with that handdyed organic yarn I showed you last time. 

And somehow blogging is bringing me back to my roots it seems. I started to rediscover all that Waldorf stuff from my childhood. I feel like I never really appreciated it enough when I was a child, it had always just been there, for granted. Now, having my own child and wanting to provide for him the best, I return to what my mum used to do for us. Being at her place I explore all her books and find lots of inspiration there. Like the seasonal corner. I really want to get into that and make some sweet little dolls so I can prepare a small corner in our house that features the season outside. Btw, Marta is showing a very sweet daffodil doll here this week. So thats what the book "Jahrenzeitentische" is all about. Here you can find an English version of that book.

In one of my mums magazins I also found an amazing articel about wool art (not felted). How do you like the shepherds mobile and that beautiful fairy? I am in love!

Our beautiful calender made it official, "Frühlingsanfang", yesterday spring has started!

Yesterday I was fortunate to get paid for spending a day contemplating. (Being a protestant,) I work as a social worker for the Caritas, a catholic social service organisation. One of the benefits of working for Caritas is that we get some extra (paid) time off every year for contemplation, bible rounds and days in a monastery etc. I love to use that offer to find some peace within the rush of the week. And yesterday was one of those days that I spend with some co-workers talking about blessings. We read some old irish blessings, some bible quotes and we wrote our own blessing. Here is mine, translated into English as good as I could. I wrote it for you so I hope you can feel the blessing.

First Art

Inspired by this book, we continued to check out the kitchen shelfs today and came up with something very amazing: aluminium foil. We had a blast! There is so much to do with this stuff, wrapping, squeezing, rolling, picking, hiding, throwing, covering, sculpturing...

Did you know you acctually see light through aluminium foil? I didn't. 

And for those of you who might get stomache pain to see the waste of such very hard to recycle material, I know, I though about it too. But then again, its a one time experience for him, I will not let him play with stuff like that everyday. Most of what we played with can be reused in the kitchen ( I need it to cover my baking because our oven is not working quite right). 

First Art - the book I was talking about gives lots and lots of ideas for art experiences with toddlers and twos. I am going to show you all of what we play out in the next month, it so much fun!

Edit: Aaron rarely tries to take objects into his mouth, still I had to supervise all his actions in this project carefully as there where small pieces of foil everywhere. So please make sure to be extra cautious!

Knit-Street-Art

I have always been in love with all kinds of street art, be it graffiti, stickers, wood, tapestry, painting, (some) tags, etc. To discover a new, great piece of art at some grey wall or dark corner can really make me happy. In the last month I discovered yet another streetart media: knitting! Lamp posts are suddenly wearing colorful scarfs, traffic lights are showing off the hottest yarn left-over pieces and chains pretend to be soft and cosy cowls... Discovering the latest street fashion is so much fun! Thanks, secret knitters!

Leinwand recycled

Gestern Nacht, als ich nicht schlafen konnte, fiel es mir siedendheiß ein: wir haben noch gar kein Abschiedsgeschenk für unsere Kollegin die am Samstag zur Weihnachtsfeier kommt und die schon seit Wochen nicht mehr bei uns arbeitet. Da sie jedoch das ganze Projekt des Freizeitstreffs für Menschen mit Behinderung maßgeblich initiierte müsste es schon etwas persönliches sein, mit Bezug zum Freizeitreff, nicht einfach irgendein Büchergutschein wie wir das sonst so handhaben.
Dann kamen mir all die alten bemalten Leinwände in den Sinn, die seit Jahren auf dem Schrank verstauben in dem wir unsere Materialen im Bürgerzentrum aufbewahren. Heute, vor der Arbeit, bin ich direkt dort vorbei gefahren und habe sie allesamt mit ins Büro genommen. Und, statt die anstehenden Hilfepläne zu schreiben, habe ich mich dem Recycling gewidmet.

Zuerst empfand ich es als absoluten Frevel in bemalte Leinwände zu schneiden, aber dann fühlte es sich richtig gut an, etwas Neues aus all dem Material zu zaubern.

Und da es um einen Abschied ging, musste ich natürlich sofort an das Gedicht "Stufen" von Herman Hesse denken, und meinen so trostreichen Lieblingssatz. "Und jedem Anfang wohnt ein Zauber inne". So fand Buchstabe für Buchstabe der Satz seinen Weg auf die Leinwand...

Hach, und gerade bekomme ich noch ganz viele andere Ideen, was ich mit den verbleibenden Resten der Leinwände machen könnte. Ein tolles Material!!! Ihr dürft gespannt sein...

Lebendiger Adventskalender

Manchmal liebe ich meine Arbeit! Mögen tue ich sie ja fast immer, aber ab und zu gibt es so Momente, da wird mir wirklich bewusst, was für einen tollen Job ich doch habe. Zum Beispiel gestern: eine meiner Klientinnen wohnt in einer autofreien Siedlung in der jedes Jahr im Dezember ein sogenannter "Lebendiger Adventskalender" organisiert wird. Jeder in der Siedlung kann sich im November in eine Liste eintragen und ist dann an einem Abend im Dezember dafür verantwortlich ein Fenster seines Hauses zu schmücken und um 18 Uhr feierlich zu erleuchten, als Adventskalenderfenster eben. Dieses Jahr hat sich meine Klientin mit meiner Unterstützung daran beteiligt. Passender Weise haben wir in unserer Kunstwerkstatt in den letzten Wochen mit den Teilnehmern Krippenbilder erarbeitet. Diese haben wir für den 13.12. als kleine Ausstellung in ihr Wohnzimmerfenster gehängt. Zur Fenstereröffnung gab es dann natürlich für alle Nachbarn Kekse und Glühwein und viel Plauderei. Und so kann man Abend für Abend durch die Siedlung pilgern, von einem Fenster zum nächsten, lernt dabei seine Nachbarn kennen und kommt so richtig in Weihnachtsstimmung - ein wunderbarer Brauch, der meiner Meinung nach sehr viel verbreiteter sein sollte.
